Gynostemma
Also known as: Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Jiaogulan, Southern Ginseng, Gypenosides, ActivAMP
Effective Dosage
200-450 mg daily based on study doses
What the Science Says
Gynostemma is a traditional Asian herb whose active compounds, called gypenosides, appear to activate AMPK — a cellular energy-sensing enzyme. In clinical trials, it has shown meaningful reductions in body fat and weight in overweight adults over 16 weeks, reduced anxiety scores in chronically stressed adults over 8 weeks, and modest improvements in exercise performance and oxygen uptake. Most human studies used doses between 200–450 mg daily for 8–16 weeks.
What It Doesn't Do
Not a proven cancer treatment — lab studies on cancer cells are early-stage and don't translate to human use yet. Won't replace a healthy diet or exercise for weight loss. Anti-aging skin benefits are only shown in mice and cell studies, not humans. No evidence it works as a standalone diabetes drug in people.
Evidence-Based Benefits
Gynostemma is known for its adaptogenic properties, which may help the body manage stress and support overall health. Some studies suggest it may have antioxidant effects and could potentially improve metabolic health.

Absorption & Bioavailability
Moderate — research suggests gut microbiome metabolism converts parent gypenosides into more bioavailable active forms, meaning absorption depends partly on individual gut health. Oral bioavailability of raw gypenosides may be limited.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Most cancer and anti-aging research is pre-clinical (cell or animal studies only) — do not interpret these as human benefits
- Long-term safety beyond 16 weeks has not been established in clinical trials
- Some products use proprietary extracts (e.g., ActivAMP) that may not be comparable to generic gynostemma supplements
- Anxiety reduction was modest and only one scale (Trait-STAI) reached statistical significance — not a replacement for clinical anxiety treatment
- 318 registered supplement products means wide variation in extract quality and gypenoside content
