What the Science Says

Tomato extract is a concentrated blend of carotenoids — mainly lycopene, phytoene, and phytofluene — plus polyphenols from tomatoes. Clinical trials show it can modestly reduce systolic blood pressure in hypertensive adults (at 15–30 mg lycopene equivalent), reduce UV-induced skin redness and inflammation, lower a cardiovascular risk marker called TMAO in overweight adults, and improve melasma severity when used alongside standard skin treatments. A water-soluble form called Fruitflow also shows antiplatelet and gut microbiota effects. Most benefits appear after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.

What It Doesn't Do

Isolated synthetic lycopene alone does not replicate the blood pressure benefits — the whole extract complex matters. Won't cure insomnia on its own; one small trial showed only modest sleep score improvements with no difference in actual sleep time. No human evidence it treats or prevents prostate cancer — cell and animal studies only. Not a sunscreen replacement; it reduces UV damage markers but doesn't change your sunburn threshold. Don't expect dramatic skin-whitening effects — melasma improvements were as an add-on to standard therapy, not standalone.

Absorption & Bioavailability

Moderate — carotenoid blood levels increase dose-dependently with whole tomato extract. Importantly, synthetic lycopene alone showed poor efficacy compared to the full carotenoid complex, suggesting synergistic absorption. Fat-soluble carotenoids absorb better with dietary fat.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Synthetic or isolated lycopene supplements may not deliver the same benefits as whole tomato extract — check the label carefully
  • Most studies are small (22–149 participants); larger trials are still needed to confirm cardiovascular and skin benefits
  • The sleep study had significant baseline imbalances between groups (more women and unemployed in the treatment group), making results unreliable
  • Animal and cell-line cancer data (prostate, demyelination) cannot be applied to humans — do not use as a cancer treatment
  • EFSA novel food safety review for yellow tomato extract is ongoing — long-term safety data at high doses is limited
  • Fruitflow is a proprietary branded extract; generic 'tomato extract' products may not match studied formulations
