Red Yeast Rice
Also known as: Monascus purpureus, RYR, Beni-koji, Monacolin K, Yeast Rice
Effective Dosage
3-10 mg monacolin K daily (standardized extract)
What the Science Says
Red yeast rice is a traditional fermented food made by growing Monascus purpureus mold on rice. Its active compound, monacolin K, works the same way as prescription statin drugs — it blocks an enzyme your liver uses to make cholesterol. Clinical trials show it can reduce LDL ('bad') cholesterol by roughly 26–34% within 6–8 weeks at doses of 3–10 mg monacolin K daily. It may also lower total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and markers of inflammation like hsCRP.
What It Doesn't Do
Not a substitute for prescription statins in high-risk heart patients. Won't significantly raise HDL ('good') cholesterol or lower triglycerides on its own. Not proven to reduce actual heart attack or stroke risk in the same way as pharmaceutical statins. Not a free pass to skip lifestyle changes — studies paired it with diet and exercise. Does not have a clean safety record: product quality varies wildly and contamination is a real documented risk.
Evidence-Based Benefits
Yeast rice, particularly red yeast rice, has been shown to effectively lower cholesterol levels due to the presence of monacolin K, a natural statin. Multiple systematic reviews and clinical trials support its efficacy in managing dyslipidemia and improving cardiovascular health.

Absorption & Bioavailability
Unknown from provided studies — absorption data not reported. Monacolin K is chemically identical to lovastatin, which has moderate oral bioavailability with significant first-pass metabolism.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Monacolin K is chemically identical to the prescription drug lovastatin — taking RYR is essentially taking an unregulated statin with unknown dosing
- Severe kidney injury outbreak in Japan (2024) linked to RYR supplements contaminated with puberulic acid, a mycotoxin — over 2,600 people affected
- Products frequently mislabeled: studies show wide variability in actual monacolin K content and some products contain undeclared pharmaceutical statins
- Citrinin contamination risk: this nephrotoxic mycotoxin is commonly found in RYR products and poses kidney risk, especially with regular use
- Can cause myalgia (muscle pain), especially in people who already have statin intolerance
- Not recommended by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) due to safety concerns; ESC/EAS guidelines do not recommend it for reducing cardiovascular risk
