What the Science Says
Rebaudioside M (Reb M) is a next-generation steviol glycoside — a natural, zero-calorie sweetener extracted or biosynthesized from the stevia plant. In a clinical trial, biscuits sweetened with Reb M produced lower post-meal blood glucose and insulin levels compared to sugar-sweetened versions in adults with overweight or obesity. Animal studies suggest it does not worsen obesity, liver health, or metabolic markers, and may positively influence gut microbiota.
What It Doesn't Do
Won't suppress your appetite more than regular sugar does. No evidence it causes weight loss on its own. Not proven to improve gut health in humans. Don't expect it to replace diabetes medication. The 'next-generation' marketing label doesn't mean it's been proven superior to other sweeteners in long-term human trials.

Absorption & Bioavailability
Poor (as a sweetener) — Reb M is not absorbed in the upper GI tract; it is hydrolyzed by gut bacteria to steviol, contributing negligible calories.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Only one small clinical trial (53 participants) in humans — long-term effects are largely unknown
- Most metabolic safety data comes from mouse models, not human studies
- Enzymatically produced Reb M may contain residual proteins from manufacturing — quality control varies by manufacturer
- Widely used in over 1,000 supplement products despite very limited clinical evidence
